Remington Army .44 Calibre Percussion Revolver

Very nice example, as refinished.
The left grip bears an excellent cartouche signifying that the gun was bought by the Union forces for use in the American civil war.
Excellent mechanics with super tight lock up and fine grips.
Very good bright shiny bore with strong rifling and only light scattered pitting.
Excellent clean chambers; Super reblue; Good barrel address; Some inspection marks lost in refinish; Lanyard ring.
More pictures will follow.

Single Shot Percussion Pistol by Bennett of London

A very attractive single shot percussion pistol, a period conversion from flintlock.  The brass barrel has three stamps, a crown over GP, what appear to be the initials IB, and a crown over V. The single word 'London' is also stamped on the barrel. There is a monogram on a brass cartouche set into the butt, and a stand of arms engraved behind the breech.
The lock side plate bears the name Bennett, presumably the maker of the original flintlock.
The pistol has a beautifully carved butt, and either its original or an old replacement ramrod.
There are two fairly minor cracks to the wood on the opposite side to the lock.

Barrel length 9"   Overall length 14.5"

Single Action Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver in .31 Calibre (Percussion)

This excellent example of Colt's famous Model 1849 has the 5" barrel with a very good address.
The six shot cylinder retains 90% plus stagecoach scene, and all cylinder safety stops (pins) are present.  Serial number 278XXX signifies manufacture in exciting times (1865) around the end of the American Civil War.
The serial numbers all match including the wedge and the grips. The loading lever has no serial number which is correct for this serial number range according to Jordan ( see site http://www.colt49.com/ the section on serial number locations). There are traces of finish and case-hardening. Excellent screws. The action is crisp, the chambers clean and rifling is strong with scattered light pitting. The gun is sharp overall with good edges, There is very little silvering left which is usual for the later '49s as the plating was very thin. Beautiiful grips with very good original varnish and only minor handling marks.

Overall length  10"   Barrel length 5"

Ref P469  £1595

J M COOPER .36" Second Model Navy Revolver (single/double action)

With rebated five shot cylinder, steel frame fitted with brass trigger guard and back strap (traces of plating remain). One piece walnut grip retaining the original varnish. Metal is smooth retaining much original blue. Overall a smooth blue/to dark brown finish.  Minor bruising to stock, chip from toe on left side. Good working order in single and double action, with occasional failure of cylinder to fully revolve on cocking (1mm or so).
A total of around 15,000 Navy and Army models were made from 1864 to 1869
Overall length 8.5"    Octagonal 4" barrel, top flat stamped with makers name and address with patent dates.
Serial no 55xx

Ref. P105    £775        £675

Double Action Adams & Deane Revolver in .360 Calibre (Percussion)
The first thing to strike me about this gun was its natural fit in my hand.
With a famous maker's name on the topstrap, and what must be quite old (smooth) replacement one piece grip, this is a really nice example of a stylish gun.
The absence of a hammer spur would have made it a good pocket weapon.
Still in its original percussion system, the action is erratic at best, suggesting wear on the cylinder 'star' and hand, although I confess to being somewhat less than knowlegeable (but ready to learn) about this model.
If no one should pick it up at the price shown - which reflects its lack of function - I may well have it given some TLC by a gunsmith.
Overall length  9.5"   Barrel length 4.75"
Ref P319        £625         £550
Footnote: My thanks to George for explaining the function of the spring, behind the cylinder on the left side of the frame. When loading, apply enough pressure to the trigger to pull the hammer slightly back, push in the top of the spring, and release the trigger. This holds the hammer slightly back, acting as a half cock.

Colt 44 Model 1860 Army Percussion Revolver

From 1860 to around 1873 Samuel Colt produced just over 200,000 of
these powerful revolvers, of which according to Flayderman 127,156 were
destined to be used by Union forces during the Civil War (1861-65)
making it the major revolver used in combat.
I date this example from late 1863, so it was there when it was needed.
The bore shows good lands and darkish rifling signifying fair use during
tumultuous times.
Overall it has a bright finish, matching numbers and a pleasing action
with good lock up. The big one piece walnut grips have the usual dings to be expected from use, and the brass trigger guard has a lovely aged patina.
There is a lot of romance around the Colt name, but it has to be
remembered that this gun was not made for target practice, and almost
certainly fulfilled its designated role.
A lovely big gun in the hand, with lots of character.
